My paintings are about contrast: the assumed beauty of flowers on the mysterious, sometimes sinister, backgrounds; The dark contrasting sharply with the light; the hard edges contrasting with the translucency and soft contours of the petals; the over-large scale (all the flowers are painted on one metre square canvases). Although the flowers are recognisable, my emphasis is on their abstract qualities.
The black paintings, the Bleak Mid-winter series, are more abstract, representing my love of the deep intensity of the flat, open Fens. The Fens remind me of childhood fairytales and the hidden mysteries below the surface. Using very little colour, I rely on the texture of the brushstrokes to convey a hint of the story.
