I have just finished River Birches for Runnymede Hotel in Egham. This is one in my studio before installation.  It is Ikat dyed silk woven with copper and stainless steel wire.

When designing a wallhanging, one of the things I take into account is exactly how it will be installed. My larger work typically needs scaffolding or a cherrypicker during installation, and I have to be on site. With the equipment needed and the time taken, it's usually best done outside office hours.

Birchtree lines

Woven as a single, continuous strip, Birch Tree Line is a flat weave background with copper wire which turns into the doubleweave birch trees looped to the front.  The trees are woven with stainless steel wire and then opened up after taken off the loom to resemble tree trunks.

This piece was inspired by looking through the roots of a fallen tree on a summer's day, seeing a bit of blue sky, the green of leaves/grass, the brown rust of the torn limbs and the tangle of earth covered roots. The hole left in the ground when the tree fell becomes a safe haven, a hiding place.

Icelines

Glacial ice shadows inspired Ice Lines.

Purple Iris wallhanging

The Dawn Series of mounted Ikat silk and wire inlay. some are framed in ash frames and some are mounted only. Based on early mornings near salt marshes and bays usually at low tide, a time to see racoons and egrets fishing and to hear the fiddler crabs clicking their claws in warning.

The skies of the fenlands in eastern England have inspired many of my pieces. This, with its layers of colour and geometric shapes is reminiscent of lone farm buildings and the lives that have passed and continue around them.

A play of light on the fens of East Anglia - very flat, open land.  The layers create distances for the viewer.

Part of the butterfly collection.  Inspired by Victorian collections of natural objects.  I have taken the idea of butterflies mounted and preserved in boxes and put them under a microscope thus enlarging the wings to see the soft, scaly textures.  Under the microscope, the wings look enormous.
